How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage
Asphalt quantity is determined by volume and density. Follow this industry-standard formula:
- Convert thickness to feet: Divide inches by 12.
- Calculate volume (cu ft): Length × Width × Thickness(ft).
- Convert to cubic yards: Divide cu ft by 27.
- Calculate weight: Multiply volume by asphalt density (standard hot mix: 145 lbs/cu ft).
- Convert to tons: Divide weight by 2,000.
- Add waste: Multiply by 1.05–1.10 for cuts, edges & compaction loss.
Asphalt vs Concrete Driveway Cost
Asphalt typically costs $3–$7 per sq ft installed, while concrete ranges $6–$12. Asphalt is cheaper upfront, requires sealing every 3–5 years, and lasts 15–20 years. Concrete lasts 30+ years but has higher initial cost. Use this calculator to compare material volume before requesting contractor quotes.
Asphalt Driveway Calculator Tips
- Standard residential thickness: 2–3 inches.
- Parking lots: 3–4 inches base + 1.5 inches surface.
- Always order 5–10% extra for spills, uneven subgrade & roller compaction.
- Hot mix asphalt must be paved & compacted within 30–45 mins of delivery.
